New Hall Porcelain, Staffordshire. 'Gazebo' pattern tea bowl with leaf border c 1782. Rare rampant heraldic lion mark to base associated with just 2 patterns, the 'Gazebo' and the 'Man on the Bridge'. The mark is based on the crest of the Earl of Shrewsbury, who owned extensive lands in Staffordshire and was a patron of the potteries. The design is based on an image taken from Matthias Digby and George Edwards work, 1 of 116 images from a 'New Book of Chinese designs calculated to improve the present taste', printed London 1754
